The Mayo Dissecting Scissors features beveled blades that are designed to cut through dense and resistant tissue with consistent force and control. The blade edges are engineered to distribute cutting pressure evenly which allows the surgeon to work through muscle, fascia and fibrous structures without excessive effort or drag.
The straight blade variant is suited for cutting superficial tissues and sutures close to the surface of the wound. The curved blade variant allows the surgeon to reach deeper structures and navigate around anatomical contours more effectively. Both configurations share the same balanced blade to handle ratio which gives the instrument its characteristic stability and strength during demanding cutting tasks.
A Supercut variant is also available which incorporates a razor sharp upper blade and a micro serrated lower blade for enhanced cutting performance on tougher and more resistant tissue. A Tungsten Carbide variant is also available which provides extended edge retention and superior durability well beyond standard stainless steel. Tungsten Carbide models are identified by gold colored ring handles for easy identification on the surgical tray.
The instrument is also used for suture removal where its controlled cutting action allows clean and efficient transection of both fine and heavier gauge sutures. Its robust build makes it equally reliable for use during cesarean sections and exploratory surgeries where access to deeper anatomical structures is required.
The ergonomic ring handles provide a firm and comfortable grip that holds up well during prolonged surgical sessions. The equal length of the handles and blades gives the instrument a well-balanced feel that reduces strain on the surgeon’s hand during extended use.
